INFORMATION

Manufacturer / Model
Schwinn
I bought this old bike from a friend today for $40. It is in need of a tune up. Seems to have all it's original parts.
I don't know much about bikes and am hoping I can get some help finding replacement parts. I don't need anything high tech. I just want it to work properly so I can ride it 1-1/2 miles down the road and back twice a day to feed my horses.

I have a 1978 Sportabout in good condition. Really nice little bike, although it was the bottom of the line when it was made. Parts are all common Schwinn stuff, so there should be no problem getting replacements. Those Suntour
Seven deraillers are quite nice. Watch the brakes if the rims are wet, not nearly the problem some people make it out to be, but the steel rims lose a lot of bite when wet.
Here is a good site for Schwinns of all
types:
If you want to keep those steel wheels the thing I would do is look for a new set of brake pads. Kool Stop makes a pad that will actually stop a chrome platted steel rim without much fuss. And if it still has "safety
Levers"(the extra arms that bolt on the the brake levers so you can almost brake when your on the top of the drops) the best thing you can do is get a big screw driver and take them off. I always used to cut off the nubs
with a hacksaw and then put on rubber hoods.
I don't know if they even make those hood anymore though.
