Need help with shoes.

I recently bought a pair of Bontrager Street shoes. I realize these are entry level shoes but I liked the idea of recessed clips. I bought these at my bike shop and planned on buying the pedals and clips later. I just noticed that there is no recess on the sole of the shoes but appears to be a slot that can be cut out. Is this normal? Should I have my bike shop install the clips? Perhaps I'm missing something. Help please.

From my experience, you will need to remove a piece to expose the recess on the sole - especially with the street shoes -- as some people just ride in them on platforms not clips. If you have not installed them before its always better to get your bike shop to do it -- even if you have done its some of the precise positioning of the cleats to engage on the correct way - no better way to stuff up knees etc with bad installation....if all else fails check their website - sure there is something there. Hope that helps....
