Over the past few days I have seen more than one article on the air quality in Beijing. I had honestly forgotten about the same issues they had when they hosed the Olympics.

@dimspace note when you race your breathing volume is about 20 times greater than normal. So 5 hour race is similar to 25 hour exposure

Interesting! I plan to eventually do long-distance cycle touring. I would love to see a lot of other countries, including a good number in Asia. Between the pollution and police-state, however, I just don't have any interest in visiting or cycle-touring in China.

Not only does such tourism support a government which has repeatedly proven itself inimical to the concept of individual civil rights, that same government is an environmental catastrophe. Given the known pollution levels, I figure I may as well take up cigarette smoking again as try to even cycle there, much less race! It sounds like just breathing is bad enough.
