It's not "too expensive", just more expensive. If more people understood the true value of a higher quality bicycle, they would be somewhat less expensive to produce. But right now, you can get a decent bike for a very reasonable price compared to what that Gitane cost new. If you were making minimum wage then, you'd be working almost a whole month to buy a bike like that. The same amount of hours, even at today's minimum, would get you closer to $1,000, which would certainly buy you a decent ride.
