Gently disassemble. Clean thoroughly. Reassemble. Rubber, cables, tape. Ride gently.

+100 to all this. I love the saddle, paint and decals. The only thing I would consider doing if you are using it as a regular rider is changing up the steel wheels for alloy ones, but not really a necessity. Oh yeah did I mention DON'T PAINT IT!!!!! By far the most interesting thing about this bike is the paint and decals.

I would have to agree...that bike reeks of character, clean it up but please don't paint it. Nice ride indeed!

Interesting, very interesting. I could see switching out the derailleurs (Valentino?) for a Nuovo Record setup, these go cheap on ebay. Also alloy rims which will bring you into the modern era as far as tire choice is concerned. These are 27 inch clinchers? Or are they sew ups? Riding the same bike you had as a youngster has got to be a rush! I have no idea wear my gold Schwinn Varsity is nowadays... perhaps serving as an anchor for a Mississippi barge.

Yester day when I was out on my ride there was this stake body truck piled high with old bikes, must have bin hundreds, big truck. A little tear came to my eye as I past it sitting at the light. Makes you think of old bikes you have seen in your life, me I think of that old bike with the wooden wheels that was given to me, I often wonder where it is today

A few years ago I'd say they were heading to the scrap yard .. nowadays they'll probably show up on Craigslist.
