Would you open your house to a stranger?
Came across a website that caters to touring cyclist. Apparently you sign up as a host and offer to give a room or a space to camp in your yard and a warm shower to cyclist on extended tours.
http://www.warmshowers.org
While I like the hospitality idea, and I have yet to meet an uncool cyclist, I am just a little leery of letting a stranger sleep in the guest bedroom.
Would be cool to interact with those adventurous souls, but what about those adventurous serial killers? What are your thoughts?

Of course any TwoSpokers traveling through central Alabama are more than welcome, no serial killers on this forum. :-)

I've often wrestled with the idea myself. I'm a member of an adventure motorcycling group that does this sort of thing, most often the person sleeps in their tent outside if there are any concerns. Usually, though, the travellers and hosts/ess "know" each other through online dialogue as well as phone conversations prior to arrival or an offer.
I personally would feel a bit uncomfortable in someone's home that I do not know, even the kindest person has their own way of "doing things" and I wouldn't want to be a burden, even if it is just for one night.
I have noticed, at least with warm showers that many people will put the traveller up in a camper trailer/RV.

I've thought about this as well. I've listened to a few "traveling two" podcasts & others where they talk about this, and apparently it is a popular thing.
On one hand, I like the notion of doing it & hearing about their experiences, but on the other...privacy is a big issue for me & my family, so I would probably have to respectfully decline.
I am a mobile PC tech & have a home based shop, and I do not permit clients to come to the house under any circumstances. A little different situation or course, but the privacy thing - you know...

I would have to see the safeguards but it sounds interesting. No doubt I'm set in my ways but for just one night?

I'd set up my 10x10 foot tent for anyone that needed a place to stay for the night.

I'd probably do it, but in our case we have an inlaw set up so we could lock the doors at night, and hey I let my brother-in-law come over all the time. (they don't get much stranger than that)

The biggest obstacle at my house is the dog situation. I have two territorial terriers that are very protective of the house. Once they know you, it's all good, but until then, well. . . .

I have a dog as well. She protects me from cats & squirrels. And other dogs. People stay away, too.
Like Knees, mine will be fine after proper introductions.

There's a fine line between in-law & out-law.
