I started riding again last year at 66 when my older sister left me her Comfort Hybrid. It's ideal.
Did your dad used to ride? Shopping could be fun for both of you.

Can't remember when it was last ridden before December.
That's true for me as well. The Cypress sees a lot less miles these days than does the LHT. Now it gets used mostly for errands, and rides when it's wet out. Some months it might see 50 miles, other months nothing at all.

The Cypress was an important step in my getting into shape and re-learning how to ride. The bike was flexible enough to let me explore a lot of different kinds of riding ... roads, gravel, overnights, inn-to-inn trips, and my first 50+ mile ride since the turn of the century.

The Cypress was responsible for increasing my cardiovascular output, endurance and building the muscles in my thighs and caves. I didn't have a lot to do when I went to a road bike.

The wife and I re-started cycling in 2005 on Fuji Monterey Comfort Bikes, they were a lot of FUN to ride and with suspension, suspension seat post and adjustable stems, the bikes could be set up perfect. A comfort bike is a great way to "re-entry" into cycling were a non-adjustable hybrid starts costing BUCKS to switch out things to make the bike FIT, jmho. Any either 700c or 26 wheel'd comfort bike would be a good start. JMHO, ymmv.
