ok, i screwed the pooch on this one.

i did my normal way of fixing things by buying a few things and eyeballing the rest of it and thinking it will work out. once again, this is going to cost me a fair amount of money to fix and i will be without my favorite bike (the specialized) for a few weeks.

here are the original bars, normal mountain bike bars:



i removed them to install some cool guy crazy road bike looking bars because i want to make my hybrid into a universal bike that i can go ride with the local group on the weekends with but still run to the mall on. i am also putting racks on this but those are going to hold for a while now .
anyways, i removed the bars, test fit the new bars (see pic) \/





love the look and feel and started taking off the old grips to temporarily put the brakes and grip shifters on this bar so i could still use my bike. i had eyeballed the bars and thought they were close enough to be able to open the mount up on the shifter/brakes to slide on but, NO-GO, these are not at all going to slid on.



SANTA MARIA!!!! i knew i was going to do this. this is exactly why i am so hesitant to make mods to stuff because every time i do it, even when i actually measure and prepare properly, something is not right and i am without whatever i am working on for some stupid extended amount of time because i cannot figure out how to make my mod work and i have to redo and reinstall all new stock parts.

so, i am now at that point in the mod where i screwed some crap up and have to ride the road bike all the time now. even when i am doing fun rides with my nine year old. we do all the long fun riding through sand and gravel curb hopping riding through grass rides and the road bike will definitely not be able to handle that.

i need help finding which brakes and shifters will work with the shifting parts on the bike already.

here is what specialized says is on my bike:

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Acera
Front Derailleur: Shimano Acera top-swing
Shifters: shimano grip shift
Brakes / Brake Levers: Specialized alloy linear-pull brakes / SRAM IBS levers

help me out guys, what parts do i need to buy to get my bike back on the road?

No fun, sj. I hope the fix is easier and cheaper than it looks now. I'll leave the diameter estimates to those members more experienced than I. I don't think I've seen handlebars configured-shaped the way your new ones are. I'll be interested to hear how they ride once you get the 'interesting' part figured out Best of luck

Those are the Scott/LeMond drop ins. They came out sometime in the early 90's. I still have a set tucked away somewhere in my garage.

couple of questions off the top of my head

Are you looking for mountain-style shifters or road style?

do you want friction or indexing?

where do you want to mount the shifters and brake levers?

i am not really particular about the shifting, i will use friction ones and as a matter of fact, i have the stem friction shifters in a box in the garage, a set of sun tour or sun or something but will they work on the rest of the shift stuff? they will let it move properly?

i really don;t care about how anything lays out as long as it works. i was going to put the stock grip shifters on until i figured out something else but now i have to figure it out faster then i was planning.

if i put those sun tour shifters on, how do i change the cables over? like, can the stock cables be made to fit or do i have to cut them down?

i will pull out those other shift levers later and snap a picture so you guys know what i am talking about better. i don;t know how the cables hook up or anything and i am sure i can come up with making it work but i want to make it right, not just rigged up.


and they are indeed scott bars. i love them, i rode the trainer on them last night, ha ha ha, for a little while.

ok guys, i didn;t get the pics. i ended up having to go pick up all the toys for tots stuff and then doing some caroling and handing out gifts and commander's coins at a local retirement home. a group of people who work on base with me all went out and we brought our kids and wives. so pics will have to be tomorrow.

some of those old dudes, man, back in the old hard core wars. all they had were pens and paper to write back and forth to their families. not like today's wars were the guys have their cell phones and there are phone stations set up back in the rear to talk to the family regularly. and still happy to talk to us younger guys about their service. i talked to two old army guys, one was 85 and the other was some where near that age. i hope their families don;t forget about them for the holidays.

anything on that ebay search look good to buy to use for brake levers? i don;t know whats good and whats not and what will work with my set up and what won't. i imagine though, any levers will work since brake levers just pull the cable and can be adjusted to take up excess slack. since my bars don;t have the little cut out to hide the brake cable, i have to get the kind that the cable comes in from the top and i like having that brakes that you can pull from the drop or from the top so you guys check that out and point me in the direction of what is good to get. i see a bunch of older style with dual pulls that i think would work fine but since i am not learned in the ways of road bikes and mountain bikes, i need the guidance of the experienced fellas.

other wise, i will just get some of the normal old dual pulls that look like the ones on my road bike
