when i bought my wife her indoor trainer, it came with a skewer and said to swap it out on a bike that had a regular nut/threaded rod axle. the skewer was a lot thinner then the axle so i never swapped the one on my road bike and just clamped hte axle in place using hte nuts.

how do i swap a skewer in place on an older style axle that uses nuts? the skewers are a lot easier for doing stuff so it would be great to actually do the swap.

Can you posts up some pics to explain what's going on? You don't need to buy a new bike for an issue with skewers.

I did some Googling and it does appear to be possible. But it appears to depend on what type of hub the bike has. I am no bike mechanic so it may be worth it to take it to a pro.

That was said with as much sarcasm as I could muster I have an old Schwinn that I was going to convert to a SS and use in a trainer but it required a new hub... Which meant a wheel build and I could not justify the cost.

If you have nutted axles, no need to swap anything. The steel skewer included with your trainer is used in place of your wheel's current QR skewer, if so equipped. My fancy Mavic skewers won't work in a trainer.

ok, i haven't swapped anything yet because i think it will be expensive to do.

i did convert the drop bars on the western auto bike to hybrid bars and put it on the trainer though so everyone in the family can ride it for exercise.

i also won some sweet 600b or c rims on ebay to swap with my wheels on my specialized when i do some events. i will ride the 26x1.9 wheels/tires for daily riding/exercising and keep those new ones for events.

"This auction is for a set of used Velocity Deep Vee 650 road wheels. The front wheel is 16 spokes the rear is 20, The rims are 30mm from the top of the brake surface to spoke holes. I was using them on my time trial bike but decided to pare down the stable. They are very true and can be used with either the installed Campagnolo cassette body or the inclosed Shimano body. A few minutes with an axle vise is all it takes to swap them out. They have Michelin Axial Pro tires on them right now. They hold air and have a few more miles left in them but the are more for the protection of the rims in shipping. The front weighs 1.06 kilos with tube, tire and skewer, the rear 1.26 kilos. They have never been crash and have been well cared for."

Yeah...if the rear wheel is bolt on...it probably won't work on a trainer unfortunately. Unless the trainer arms have notches in them like cycle ops ones do.
