Most of the roadies I know are far nastier in forums than they are in person. There are plenty of people who are endowed with large "internet muscles." I have been really lucky and have met some really good folks on the road....and was in New Jersey and Philadelphia. I am anxious to see how it is up here in Canada.

Cheers,

Brian J.

It's called "Being polite", and there is nothing wrong with it. Just like common sense though, you just can't always expect it. Most riders around here though are pretty cool, and at least you get a nod and a smile. We are all the few, the proud, the brave enough to dare the road. We all have a common enemy - the distracted driver.

Maybe some people don't feel like being talked to and has nothing to do with being 'elitist?'

One of the things I enjoy about cycling, is that it can be a few hours of uninterrupted 'me' time. No one asking me to do something at work, no partner asking me to take the trash out, and it's a perfectly valid excuse to let the cellphone drop into voice-mail.

People may have a million reasons for not responding to your hello, and not a single one might be related to the fact you are not geared up like they are.

I'm sure that there are quite a few bike-snobs/elitists and that are their reasons, but every time someone doesn't say "hello" back shouldn't lump them into the "omg, they are elitist!" camp.

Perspective is everything. Being new to road bikes I make two observations. One, once I was on a road bike others I passed, etc. seemed more inclined to respond with a nod, wave, etc. We laughed that we were now "in the club". Second, things happen faster, take more concentration, and I am just plain more mentaly involved when on the road bike and sometimes just dont want to let go to wave when I am working hard. LOL
