I have done a number of gravel centuries that are increasingly popular in Minnesota and the Midwest. The routes have all consisted of a mix of some pavement (<5 miles), gravel, crushed limestone, double track (<5 miles) and anything in between. I have done the rides on a fixed gear cross bike, geared road bike (the Surly Pacer fits up 32c tires), single speed mountain bike and fixed gear commuter.
As a general rule, wider tires are better for gravel/crushed stone. I have run 25c, 28c, 32c and 2.5".
As long as your not afraid of a little scratch or two, your road bike can certainly handle the crushed rock path. Try some cross tires (Vittoria has some really low-pro options) or commuter/touring tires. I am always a fan of 28c Panaracer T-Servs.
The 'gist here is that you can ride anything on anything. Of course a more appropriate bike will let you go a little faster or be a little more comfortable.
