Are cannondale bikes worth the price?

Cannondale bikes seem pretty good, but pricey. What do you think, are they worth the price?

I need to get a decent bike that would be for both light mountain biking and some road use (commuting about 2 miles to school).

Can anyone reccommend a specific model that they have experience with?

They are pretty pricey in comparison to other brands. --> In that for the same amount of money, you'll get a much better parts spec on the competition.

Cann used to be pretty innovative with some pretty unique products, but we'll see what's in store over the next few years what with the new owners and all...

Those lefty's freak me out--especially after watching a pro soloist at Big Bear 2 years ago break 2 in the same race. After the 2nd one fell apart, he carried his bike back to the start/finish line and dropped out of the race.

That is very interesting, I have not heard much negative feedback regarding the lefty forks but thats interesting to say the least.

I tried to dig up some info on it, but all I found was this. I didn't realize at the time that it was Rob Lichtenwalner (aka vegan Rob). There was a write up about him a while back in Dirt Rag.

Apparently, Cannondale recalled a bunch of models back in June of 2007 for the lefty problem:
