Classic vs. Vintage

On another bicycle forum there was a fellow who butted heads with everyone who used the term 'vintage'. He was adamant that the correct usage was 'classic' and that vintage *only* referred to grapes and wine. As a word guy I took about two minutes of online research to find many definitions like this:

Vintage as an adjective: Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic.

Mr. Contentious probably doesn't call it a sphincter, either, only an anus.

I'm talking about his mirror reflection.

Those two words are used interchangable all the time to mean the same thing. Do I have vintage or classic cars? It doesn't matter. Supposedly vintage describes things of high quality of an era gone by that made things like cars, wine, etc; classic is supposedly describing something to do with the arts, like writing, painting etc. But Americans don't use the words the way a dictionary would define them, we mix them all up so neither is incorrect or correct, we just know what one means when one of the words is used.
