Yeah that bothered me.
You would think a mega corporation like that would do a little research on its commercials subject!

Hey lets cast some hipster looking actors and sell the idiot population something that they wont question because they totally trust everything they see on tv.

f.
It doesn't work that way. Some "important men" in a big box get shown some drawings (story boards) and then they open their checkbooks while patting themselves on the back for reaching across several demographic groups and being hip at the same time.

For what it's worth, if you were trying to reach the largest percentage of the population, "top spec gears" is a fairly benign description that anyone can understand at face value. And it does sum up a Gates drive on a single speed pretty well too.

Because you're a cyclist. The target demographic for that ad is not cyclists. From an "outsider" perspective, a belt drive without that "high maintenance, dirty, greasy chain" is impressive spec. A chain and freewheel would make that bike equal to a Walmart single speed otherwise. (To them)

I said I like it. I was agreeing with you.

I like derailleurs, so I must use chains, but "a belt drive without that 'high maintenance, dirty, greasy chain' is impressive spec." Yes! Yes indeed, this 'cyclist' couldn't agree more. Top spec gears!

I though that was sarcasm, sorry. My idea of the perfect blend of technology would be a belt drive going to an 8 speed IGH, but using electronic shifting, routed internally, or even wireless. No maintenance, and the simple lines of my single speed, but better able to climb hills (my weakness) and bomb down them at insane speeds (also a weakness).

I wonder has anyone ever tried using a carbon fiber shaft in a shaft drive bike??? Three internal gears on the front and an internal system in the back totally enclosed and sealed in lubricant. Nothing to ever oil or grease. Wireless shifting, but probably a price tag that is larger than the debt of the state of CA. With CF the weight of the shaft might be kept down to something more practical. Still I know the best way to improve the performance of my bike is to lighten the engine

A driveshaft is subject to constant shock via loading and unloading. I'd want it in a plexiglass tube so I could watch it shatter.
