I had an idea earlier today.

A good way to ward off dogs is to carry a short piece of bamboo with a small split in the middle of it.

What you would do is yell sharply and loudly, and then smack your leg or bike or something with the bamboo, which makes a sharp rap. It should get the dog's attention and then keep it at a distance.

Loud sticks tend to keep dogs back.

holster at the back/side of you on your belt.

like, rear right or something, whichever you're more comfortable with.

or on your back at a downward angle to pull it out fast.

or even on the downtube.

Noisemakers seem the best option. A pistol would seem ideal but they're frowned upon in so many places. And there's the possibility of escalating a dog fight into a gunfight with the property owner. People who keep mean dogs don't have the best judgement to begin with.

It'd be reassuring to have not only a warning device but also an actual defensive device. Maybe an air horn backed up with pepper spray. Waving a stick is a pretty good deterrent but only seem to work if I get off of the bike and direct my full attention to the dog. Then they just stop, not retreat. I'd like not having to break my pace. It might give the owner a wake up signal too that their dog's up to no good.

I doubt you were laughing!!!!! The pine trees are so close to the road here, they're on you almost before you know it, gets pretty interesting sometimes!!!

I carry a gun but im a cop, plus I would never shot anything unless i had to. I like the water bottle trick myself. Also find out who the dog owner is if you can, call your local police and report it to them. I get calls like this all the time and have even charged owner before for their dogs being a menace.

I ave one littlt niper that dont bark he hides and is on you befor you know it. And a lab that can realy run he was on the outher side of the road and made it acrost the road thrugh trafic and was on me but a truck got on his air horn and that dog left a skid mark trying to stop. I got some of that Dog Repelent spray sinse and the niper I used it on twice. no more chaseing for him. I like this as it don't seam to hurt the dog thay just stop and walk away, no wimper or rubing ther eyes like if you mase
