If I can't lock it to something I run the cable thru the spokes to bind it up against someone just riding it away.
The police, laws, cameras, or "keeping it in sight" isn't much of a deterrent. The thief only has to be one step ahead of me to make his get-away.

I have a new carbon Colnago road bike. It never leaves my site unless there is someone that is in my ride group watching it. I don't even leave my Defy 2 unattended.

If I'm not riding it, I'm either straddling it, within a few feet of it or it's locked in my basement and guarded with gunpowder.
Until I raise enough money for a new rack, I cannot travel with it.
When I do, it will be link my last bike...and go in the hotel/condo/beach house/cabin or wherever, when we aren't together like we are made to be. Lol

Having had a Specialized Rockhopper nicked from outside a music shop where I was literally inside for a minute, I am very very paranoid... so I lock it all the time.Last year when I camped in my one man tent, I even had the traditional string from the bike to big toe (as well as a lock to a tree).

The last bike of mine to get pinched was in 74. Schwinn Varsity green. Taken from in front of Saint Annes Hospital in Fall River. $25. reward if returned.

I dont own a bike lock. When out riding if I stop at a store I roll my bike in with me. I get a few odd looks so be it.

I will start the trend over here I think. I am used to odd looks anyway. If they don't like it, they don't get the trade

The jolly old UK must have changed in the years since I was there! Heck, you could barely walk on the sidewalks outside the markets due to the baby prams left there while the moms were shopping inside!! Kinda hard to lock a baby in a pram, but I guess either they were up for grabs or folks just respected others property more than today!

It has. About 5 years ago, we even had a case of an elderly woman in the Newcastle area who was walking home from her local chip shop appallingly attacked and sadly died as a result of her injuries, purely to steal hr fish and chips. An extreme example, I know....
As in other places, drugs are a big part in this. If ain't nailed down and it can be sold to feed your habit, it will be nicked. Sad but true.
