Trek 4300 MTB to hybrid

I have been converting my Trek 4300 (i really like the bike) to more of a hybrid. Changed - tires to 1 1/4 " road tires, extended stem to raise handlebars 2" (I like the more upright position), new seat. I would like some advise re the crank gearing (currently it is 42 - 34- 24) and the cassette (11 - 32 8speed). Would it make sense to change the gearing? I ride paved streets and paved bike trails usually fairly flat terrain. I am looking for more speed on flat surfaces. Has anyone had experience with this type of modification or does anyone have advise?

If my objective is not reasonable, and a new bike is in order, i would be happy to receive suggestions.

If you want more speed, pedal faster. Unless you can spin out your 42x11, a gearing change isn't going to make you faster.

faster vs gearing

Thanks for the message. i understand your comment. My question is; if the gearing is changed do you achieve more speed with less effort? I seem to notice I pedal at speeds similar to others with me and go slower. Am I just imagining?

Are these other cyclists more fit than you? If you're both spinning the same RPM, but they're going faster, it's because they're in a higher gear. If you ride with someone that's a real masher, they could spin slower than you, but in a much higher gear, and still go faster.

My advice still stands, but I can illustrate it a bit better for you. Find a nice flat stretch of road, and see how fast you can go with that 34x11 combo. You'll find at some point that your legs are spinning crazy messy circles, and your spin is no longer efficient. When you can come close to that on the 42 ring, it's time to change your gearing.

The easiest way for anyone to improve their speed (and fitness) is with interval training. As long as you can spin, rather than mash, you'll be using your lungs to good effect.
