What are the best style of breaks for downhill bicycle racing?

I'm new and I'm asking alot of quesiton so here is another.
I want to get into down hill road racing. What's the best style of Brakes for this? Can I do with out the front brake to cut down on weight?

Front brake is more important to riding than the rear is. (Although I suggest you keep both brakes.)

The "best" brakes as far as power and modulation are hydraulic disc brakes.
If best = lightest you'd need to look at lightweight road calipers.
