I have two bikes, a Trek 3700 I bought about 5 years ago, and a Canondale CAAD 8 6 I just got about a month ago. My wife has a Trek 2000 we bought used, but in good shape and it fits her good, and a Trek 4300.
The big reason to avoid hybrids (for me) is the lack of options for hand placement. This becomes a really big issue on long rides.
A good road bike will also have a more efficient (if less forgiving) tire/wheel combination. You should be able to use tires that allow higher pressure for less rolling resistance.
my current favorite is Centurion super lemans for the mid 70's. Been completely redone in green and black with a few green and black parts thrown on to complete things.
I finally traded my old '83 Trek model 500 roadbike (the beautiful but deadly Brooks saddle was killing my buns) on a Fuji Absolute 3.0. I love it so far. May trade up to a 1.0 next season though, or else upgrade some of the components, I can't decide which.
