I think I've been pretty lucky on this one - I commute in one of the worst cities - Orlando - over two decades but have never had any serious encouters. Had one guy scream out the window and one or two bird-flips, but I'm generally over on the far right and really don't do much to provoke.

That said, I do keep a canister of police mace on my belt, just in case.

I did have a car in a rough section of town suddenly slow down and the punks in it look back at me. Reached down to my mace-holster, pulled out a tiny (and imaginary) cellphone, cupped it close, and made a point of looking towards the licence plate while talking. They sped off. Only then did I lower my empty hand back to the handlebar...
