I went from being able to bill a high of $275/hr to not getting any work, because people would rather pay some noob with a cheap DSLR $400 to shoot their wedding.

I do it for free for friends and family and they look way better than a lot of "professional" work. I don't consider myself a pro and I don't have pro equipment but if you just know the basics and take pics yourself or have someone close do it for you you're more likely to get the kind of shots you want i think cause there's been too many wedding albems I've seen with weird pics that make me and the married couple think what was this photograher thinking.
I guess that since most folks are going to get married more than once, that shouldn't be too much of an issue. But just because you know the basics, that doesn't mean you should undertake what may be one of the most important days in the life of the bride and groom.

Right. It's the same with cycling too.

I wonder how many of these are the result of having a friend who's "good with a camera?"

Ouch. Of course, there's not much difference between an amateur with an interest in photography, and say, someone who printed their own B&W for 20 years, or has a degree, or went through all the trouble of learning things like offset printing just so they could understand shooting for publication better. Nope, no difference at all.
