With enough heavy grease, anything becomes very waterproof.
My BB outlasted the wheels due to them getting bent by a truck. Though now that I think about it, the hubs are still in my parts pile, and the grease in the cups still looked pretty new when I dismantled everything. For that matter, the rims are still sitting in the garage and don't look anywhere near unsalvageable, so I may restock those spoke lengths and rebuild them as spares. (Besides, it's an excuse to build a 3-leading, 3-trailing
wheelset, which I just really like the looks of.)
