I'm not aware of any oxymoron wheel sets. Sorry pet peeve, but can't use good and cheap for anything in the same sentence. You ALWAYS get what you pay for.
Well to make everything clear I am receiving my first road bike this December a 2011 caad 10 105 fully stock. I'm looking into getting in to road racing. I'm just asking questions like this to get some input before I get my bike, any is appreciated.
I was recommended to upgrade my wheel set - I have no idea where to start or why. I have a madone 3.1 which is entry level and I know lighter is better, especially weight that is spinning. How many in the forum go the extra mile with high $$ wheel sets and how much of a difference does it make ? My first carbon experience with a 22lb bike was a WOW experience - would an expensive wheel set bring on a double WOW ??
How much of a difference do lighter wheels make? How much do you weigh? What kind of mileage do you get in per month? What's your average speed over 20 miles?
Twenty years ago, I had a 56cm bike that weighed in right under 20 pounds. That's for Columbus tubing. Your plastic bike must have some porky wheels. That I won't argue.
Except for the carbon - the pedals are big dual heavy things and i have mirrors - it could be lighter - it was weighed by my wife holding it on the bathroom scale & subtracting - the tire wheel set is 700X23C Bontrager wheel/tire combo, my weight 215, my mileage 80-100 week, more in the summer, average speed on MUP ~16.5mph solo
