I think the signs are more to warn drivers not to abandon vehicles on the travel lanes. If it dies, move it off the freeway, or it will get plowed (literally, possibly, by a snow plow or truck).
Truckers sometimes will sleep on the freeway, if there is a major accident or snow shutting down the freeway. Usually dozing in their seat or the bottom bunk, with the radio on a given channel, and someone assigned to watch and give the wake up call, honk, or beat on doors to get them moving when it opens up.
