Hi... I'm trying to look for a nice older road bike with 105/Ultegra level componentry. Can you tell me which gruppos from the past (early to mid 90s) would be comparable in performance to today's 105/Ultegra?

Performance will be comparatively the same. Older 105 works just as well as newer 105 for the most part.

The principal difference is the number of gears and also that the older group is...well...old.

As long as the parts are in good condition and adjusted properly either group should function just fine.

Ultegra used to be known as 600 so if you see that name you'll know it's one step down from Dura Ace.

I'm currently using 600. Have been for the last 9 almost 10 years. They are working great!

I have a set of Dura Ace 8speed brifters as well as sets of 9 and 10 sp. The older ones are definitely better made, maybe a litlle heavier but really well made. My message here is don't be afraid of old!
