V brakes can send you over the bars. I don't think most people need more performance than that.

Depends on the geometry of the bike in question, no? My "cheap" Tektro discs can drift the V3 if Im moving and hit the levers instead of just touching them. They will hold the bike still on a 15 degree slope with my feet off the ground, without even having to squeeze the levers. And, no worries about wet rims.

That said, I can't imagine the brakes throwing me over the bars on the V3...............(see my avatar pic)

All of the poorly performing discs I rode were mechanical; even as recently as this year. I certainly respect the other member's experience in regard to breaking in a disc but if it doesn't work right away for me, I no buy! The discs on my 08 Felt Q720 worked great the first test ride and are still performing at a level light years beyond any V-brakes I've ridden.

Just think my 1st mountain bike that I bought in 1990 had Cantilever brakes I was amazed by the stopping power. My current bike has V brakes greatly improved braking performance over the Cantilever. I only ride XC so I don't know if disc brakes would benifit me. I would have to get a new bike, my bike doesn't have the lugs for disc brakes.

I've got a Q720 too! I need to bleed the lines though after a few years mine are getting a bit mushy.

I've got some lower end Shimano mechanicals on my Trek 4300 and i'm planning on upgrading them to Avid BB7's. The main reason for the switch and my main bitch about the stock brakes on the bike are the fact that the rotors only take organic pads, and all the pads on the market fade out after a couple of months of mountain biking. Oh, yeah, and it doesn't help that i'm a bit of a fatass too.

I'm only 21 but like to think of myself as the resident curmudgeon where new bike equipment is concerned. I think much of what is new is unneeded and a foolish waste of money. Not so disc brakes. On a mountain bike there is no better system. I'd prefer the cheapest mechanical disc system over the best cantilever. My limited experience with discs and MTBs shows them to be fabulous in wet conditions and this comes with no worry as to crap clogging the rims and forks. I love disc brakes.

It is my hope that some day an extremely light-weight road model will come about. A model no heavier than current calipers. There is no real need for this brake as calipers are OK on the road, I'd just like to have them so impressive is their performance in my eyes.

By the way, for anyone thinking that titanium's heat dissipating properties would make it a good for disc brakes, let me assure you it's a bad idea. Very bad.
