In need of a new set of tires...

I am in need of a good set of tires that maintain good traction for going up and down gravel. Also a set that will ride well on dusty trails/roads.

What characteristics should I look for in the knobs?

Not much will give you traction in loose gravel, but if you aren't in mud I would try a semi-slick or a tire with lower profile knobs like a Hutchinson Fly Light.

Personally i love the WTB weirwolf. They might be a little too aggressive of a tire for you though.

My buddy swears by the Maxxis Ignitors I tried, disliked, and sold him.

I personally prefer Hutchinson Spiders; nothing better under my wheels for all types of terrain.

Why didn't you like the Ignitors? I have them on a junk bike and have beat them without issue, found they grip excellent as well.

Yeah, grip was great -- rolling resistance was greater. Maybe it was also because they were 2.35's....
