A saddle is a very personal thing. One that fits my posterior and feels comfy to me may not fit you at all. Fit is the most important consideration when purchasing a saddle. Some manufactures like Specialized, have a fitting system to help select the proper saddle. You want a saddle that supports your sit bones. A saddle that's too narrow is going to feel like the "rock" that you described--Too wide and it's going to rub and chaff.
If you feel under your arse while sitting down, your two sit bones are easily found. Measure the distance between them and select a saddle that is going to be just wide enough to support them.
Personally, I like the WTB Rocket V. That saddle fits me perfectly.
