I listen to music when I ride. I ride mostly in rural areas and for 30 ish miles. I figure people ride bikes like they drive, either they have their head up their butts or they don't. Hearing is always a plus but situational awareness is and always shall be number one.

I agree to an extent, but having earphones to obstruct you hearing versus not being smart enough to keep the car radio at a level to where you can still here things around you, seems to be a horse of a different color.

well the thing with cars & motorcycles is you have to hear the emergency vehicle coming at you so you can yield. On a bicycle, what are you wanting to hear? The car screeching right before he hits you? I don't see the advantage in that, I doubt if I can jump out of the way in time nor can I leap it. I don't care to hear the redneck yelling how stupid he thinks I am. I steadily scan from the 3 o'clock to the 9 o'clock position and glance back over my left shoulder to about 7. However, in groups.. I agree, no headphones.
