Has a 65 year old who has been cycling for over 50 years, I can't see the point, Motor cyclists wear far superia helmets and they still die (and not all have been going fast)Most helmets are only designed to protect hitting someting at 12 miles per hour.

OK, we need to stop. One of two points of view:

1.) "I wear a helmet because I feel safer that way."

2.) "I don't wear a helmet because I choose not to."

There is no definitive data either way, so statistical arguments are all nonsense.

Pour out the Kool-Aid.

Oh, and before I forget the endless masses of organized rides out there that require helmet use: it's your event, you can require purple socks if you want -- just stop lying to people.

It's not a "lie" - "purple socks" help a little with liablity!!

But I do agree - I wear a helmet; and a seat belt. To each their own. The only ones that get me are those who ride a bike while carrying their helmet on the handlebars. I'm just waiting for that thing to fall down into the front wheel and bind up flipping those people! Leave it at home!!!

I wear a bright yellow Bell Citi helmet with lots of reflective tape. I think it helps drivers see me. I figure that if they see me, maybe they won't hit me. Of course, when commuting I usually wear ridiculously bright jackets and use lights when it's dim or dark--even a flashing headlamp, which makes a big difference--drivers slow down and give me space! I use my husband's motto (he rides a motorcycle): Pretend that they're all out to get you, and you'll drive safer. In my opinion, brightly colored helmets give you height and visibility in city riding, and that's a good thing.

I've been on a lot of motorcycle accidents, and death is usually caused by neck breaking, but the helmet does it's job. The heads are usually well protected, just barely attached.

I crashed this past Saturday, and pretty hard. Guy in front of me slammed the breaks and we were in a pretty fast paceline at the time. Needless to say, I have a few cracked ribs and some abrasions. When I got back to my car (12 miles later), I noticed two rather large dents/gashes in my helmet. I thought I remembered sort of landing on my head, and I guess that really was the case because I had the battle scars to prove it. I can tell you one thing, at the very least; that helmet saved me from stiches or staples, plus a ride in an ambulance. Had I not been wearing the helmet, no way I would have been in any condition to finish the ride.

The poll stats (above) say it all. Always go with the table odds.
