How often should you get a new helmet?

I just found an old helmet in my garage that is still in it's original packaging but probably about 4 yr old, do you think it is safe to use? I've heard that helmets only last a certain amount of time but wasn't sure if thats true or not.

Thanks.

There's no shelf-life on a helmet. Most helmets are only useful for one hard hit. they are made to shatter and spread the impact out over the entire helmet. After one good smack, trash it or put in on the trophy shelf. Some helmets, such as BMX helmets are rated for many impacts though.
