FMC, I like your idealism but I dislike the execution of it. Many of the things you listed are due to there not being an alternative or, that the alternative was less desirable than what was taking place. For instance:
48. Personalized license plates
To foster one's singularity . . . while keeping the homogenizing car culture alive and well.
No one is upset by this.
47. Cars are hell
During the 40 days of the Gulf War, 146 Americans died keeping the world safe for petroleum while at home, 4900 Americans died in motor vehicle accidents.
Kind of not really. Saddam was gaining ground in a time when the Muslim threat wasn't clear. Turns out we were right on that one.
43. The suburbs
Phase one of a cunning master plan to facilitate automobile dependency.
Whose doing this? the Bildeburgers? The 33.3 degree mason? Who?
42. Carchitecture
How many structures exist exclusively to nourish the car culture? We can start with the highway, on-ramp, off-ramp, gas station, strip mall, car wash, auto repair shop, car rental establishment, bridges, tunnels, and, of course, the suburbs.
DO you also hate capitalism?
41. Humans did not evolve to ride in cars
Or in boats and planes, for that matter. A transparent case of stone age biology in a space age society.
We didn't evolve to wear shoes either, although I would say it worked out to our advantage.
40. The internal combustion engine
Or, as Ralph Nader calls it, the "infernal combustion engine." Possibly humanity's foremost folly.
Agriculture? Nukes? Really this is it? No I don't think so.
39. Mechanics
Your car dies, you walk into the repair shop, and you just know what the mechanic is thinking: "I know something you don't and, man, am I'm gonna make you pay for it."
Feel free to be mechanic. I don't think any ones stopping you. Are you going to knock Doctors down a peg as well?
29. Poor posture
That's what we get from sitting hunched over a steering wheel 8 billion hours a year.
I'm sure glaring at or monitors had nothing to do with it. It must be the cars. Not horses, not bikes, cars.
28. Walking in right angles
Thanks to our car-centric civilization, most cities are designed in grids forcing pedestrians to forever walk in right angles.
Efficiency is a bad thing? I would prefer to not walk around in circles, but honestly Freemason, Really?
Look dude I like you but you have no real reasons to switch to bikes, or disown cars. I would say this was meant in jest but I some how doubt that.

I'm sure he meant the first 125 years, but it's not like we've made much progress in our living standards in the last hundred or so.
No exceptions, sorry. If you eat your cake, you cannot still have it.

First I am not the original author of this. Second with some of this you are refering to things that only apply to the last 20 years or so. Like your comment abotu posture being because fo glaring at computer monitors. Cars were around long before the modern computer monitor.
As far as the comment about suburbs, well the answer is city planners, developers, engineers, etc. The question that should be asked is, is it intentional? That is a matter of opinion. Some would say yes, some no.

Horses too? How old are they? How old is Scoliosis? How about calcium deficiency? How about right angles?
Suburbs as a conspiracy to get us to drive? Really? Come on man. Did it ever occur to you that not every one wants to live in the city?

So far, all we have learned from this thread is that the people of Beverly Hills are very important. Or busy. Or something.

Sure, I prefer bikes over cars, too; been car-free myself since fall of 2004. I use public transit less than 2 months a year, due to the weather and surface conditions.
I've watched the development of electric/hybrid cars with some interest; it doesn't mean, though, that I'll be getting on that bandwagon, either. I will personally stay with two wheels, as long as my mortal clay will allow.
My 'universe' has shrunk some; I no longer think much outside my county. But then, I don't have the time or the funds for extended travel, anyway. Since my Army days, travel for the sake of it has gone almost completely away. (But OOOOHHHH, would I LOVE to see Europe again!)
But the car itself isn't the core problem; as was said earlier, it's the dependency ON the car in modern society. Too often, the car is used as an expression of ego, sometimes overcompensating for a certain lack in someone's life. But, since common sense was declared dead and buried in the last century, to expect the population to use these devices sensibly is a bit ludicrous. I'd have no problem with anyone on the roads if they were indeed exercising some common sense in their driving.
Maybe it's a bit trite to parrot, "Can't we all just get along?", but that IS the core to society and civilization. Rules and compromises are made in order for everyone to get along -- but mankind has screwed that up, too. Even merely using the dark "we could all get along fine if we all just left the other guy ALONE", we'd be better off.
50 reasons cars suck? How about 50 reasonable reasons? 50 fixes? 25?
