I'm in a small town and there's not really a lot of side walks. I would still prefer to be on the road. I think the wide open space gives you more wiggle room.

I wish they could just put bike lanes every where. It seems like it would save everyone a lot of trouble.

That is exactly, why I stick to the road. There are too many unavoidable hazards on the sidewalk.
