Hydration and food.

I'm doing a 40 mile ride tomorrow. What's best to bring on the ride? I've got two water bottles w/ water is all I've been filling them with. I generally carry power bar- performance energy. Will that be enough to get me through the ride?

For a ride of that distance I carry two bottles of water like you. As for food, I carry two breakfast bars for myself and a third for sharing that are about 190 calories each.

I always like to make sure I have plenty of electrolytes as well. I always ride with one bottle of water and one of Cyto/EFS, etc. I have very quickly become a huge fan of EFS. I also use the power bars but recently have opted for Rice Krispies Treats. They are just easier to eat for me. Sometimes I'll take a GU as well.

It's better to bring too much than not enough. I made that mistake on my first century. Ran out of water and food two-thirds of the way in. I didn't even have money. Lucky for me, it was a group ride and another ride spotted me some cash at a stop.

How much will you be sweating? If you sweat a lot, you're going to need to replace more than just water. Any hard effort over an hour generally requires some form of electrolyte replacement, or sodium, at the very minimum. Quick carbs are good too.

Drink at least one bottle of water before you leave, and take one bottle, plus an undiluted mix or something like Gatorade if you're going to sweat a lot. And don't forget to rehydrate and replenish with carbs within 30 minutes of completing your ride.

Something that short, two bottle, a gel and a bar should do. That said, I'd have twice as much as you need to play it safe!!
