Moped Conversion?

Has anyone ever heard of converting the parts from an old moped into a motorized bicycle ? If you had a small enough one and a large enough bike to match up with it...

I'm sure it could be done, and that it has been done. But they have plenty of kits available.

Do you have an extra motor and a welder?

I think they sell those. I've had mopeds and the engine's are bigger than you might think. But if you do it post pics. You provoked my curiosity.

A 49cc engine on a bicycle? That would be one crazy ride.

Nothing less than 883cc for me.

Awesome. Let me know next time you ride a 883 mated to a bicycle. I'll travel just to watch the ride.

Well, I alternate between the two, not sure it would be a good idea to mix them.

Really, if you want engine power, I think you're better off with a real moped. Better brakes, real suspension front and rear, better lights, stronger frame. I got one when gas was expensive last year and have put 11,000 km on it. It's totally fun, rain notwithstanding.

That video is of an HT kit from China. I just got one. Too much fun.

Actual pedaled moped engines also include a transmission with a centrifugal clutch, and usually a belt drive between the clutch and the front drive sprocket/shaft. This makes the engine case very large - too large to drop into a bicycle frame without a lot of modification.

That said, nothing is impossible. If you're going to try a proper moped engine, go with a Puch E50. There's a lot of those engines around, and parts are plentiful.
