I got one really cheap at www.enginesonlineshop.com and even though they said it's legal, I think in my city it's not. I got a ticket from the police to register with my local dmv. When I went down, they made me buy a $50 permit for my 2 stroke bike. It's good for the lifetime of the bike. It's just a way for them to make money. Anyways it is legal to ride but you must pay the $50 permit. Which evens out since the kit cost me only $150 on the site with free shipping.

What city is that? What a rip-off! Do you have to buy "permits" in multiple cities?

If you are using the rubber donut sprocket mount, get rid of it now! That will break your spokes and come out of round. Get a Howard Sprocket Mount, made in USA, about $50, clamps onto the hub. I just got one and it's stout stuff! It uses the standard 9 hole cogs too, unlike the Manic Mechanic adapter.

This was in Hermosa Beach. But it seems like it doesn't matter where. The Form from DMV was a generic form to register a bike. It's good for the lifetime of the vehicle and it's a one time fee.

Here's mine. It gets 90+mpg and goes around 30 tops. http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/p480x480/550762_287098621384868_625145193_n.jpg

If it's not full of fuel and cargo, it's not terribly heavy, and while not the fastest thing to pedal, it is pretty comfortable and has a wide gear range (52,42,30 & 13-34).

This is my first motorized bike build!

It's so much fun off road it can go anywhere. I love the freedom of throwing it over padlocked gates and motoring around places where only bikes can go! There's some great info about these bikes at http://www.motoredbikes.com

Yeah, I really like that forum. Why would you cut across padlocked gates? Trespassing is a bad idea.

I'm talking about government forest reserves. They have padlocked gates but walking and riding bikes in them is ok. So that means motorized bikes are ok too.

I've got a couple eBikes, one that I've outfitted with some custom gear. You can see it on youtube - look for 'bikemotive'.
