Just a reminder that May is national bike month, and May 16-20 is bike to work week. If you're able to ride to work but have been putting it off, now's a good time to start. And if you've been riding to work, that's even better.
With gas prices being what they are, commuting by bike can put some cash back in your pocket. Just as important, you'll reap the health benefits of cycling in the form of better fitness. This can possibly include weight loss, lower blood pressure, and increased aerobic capacity. Cycling is also a low-impact sport, so it's better on your knees, feet, and joints than running. And the idea of running to work just sounds silly anyway. But a leisurely ride to work can do wonders for your sense of well-being.
Of course, it's not for everyone. Perhaps you have a long freeway commute. Or like myself, every inch of roadway on your ten mile commute is being torn up as part of a two year long construction project, and you have an aversion to heavy equipment and giant potholes. Not to worry. Some cyclists have been known to drive the freeway portion with their bike on a rack or in the car, then park and ride the rest of the way in. Or take a bus or train part way to work, and cycle the rest. Whatever works best for you. And if you can't ride to work, no worries. Take a spin after work. Hopefully, you'll run into a few like-minded cyclists, and maybe even make a new friend or riding partner.
