Building a commuter bike

I have a voyager from shwinn before they were bought out. My goal is to turn a hybrid bike into a commuter/groceie getter. Any ideas on equipment would be awesome.

I have a Jamis Aurora Elite I think would make a great commuter bike. the only thing I would change are the tire size 700x32 now, I would go 700x35 if the roads were real bad or 700x28 if the roads were real good.

My commuter bike that I really hardy use any more is an old Diamondback. The only thing I did was tie and solder the spokes. I did a lot of jumping up onto sidewalks where the road wasn't safe.

Well I started with a 90's Specialized Hard Rock after just a few months and 900 miles (~100 or so from weekend rides ) I just need a bit more. Found a sweet deal on a Trek 7.5 FX that I could not pass up. The trek rear rack and super expandable rack bag sealed the deal.

The best customization I made for my commuter bike is the Topeka MTX trunk bag with the MTX beam rack. Riding with a backpack is too uncomfortable for me. This bag/rack combo is super easy to use, quick release, fairly lite. Only down side is it's a bit small; it's tight to fit my lunch, wallet, keys, phone, iPad and a few random items in it. Definitely not big enough for any textbooks or anything much larger than a mini laptop, but for me, it's just about perfect for work and back.

full coverage fenders with the rubber mudflaps. Skunk stripes in the office=fashion faux pas.

I'd also suggest a decent lock and a rack/pannier/trunk system as others have suggested.
