I feel kind of silly asking this since I briefly owned a Schwinn CrissCross with this style of bars but my ownership of the bike was so brief that I never actually rode it. [Purchased used on Craigslist one weekend, sold the next weekend because the frame was too small.]

I'm investigating options for a new handlebar for the captain position on my wife and I's tandem. Right now it has super-wide riser bars that go beyond MTB and into cruiser bar territory. I added some bar ends for an additional hand position but (as my other thread states) we are planning on doing some touring later in the year and I'm wondering is a butterfly bar would be better?

Has anyone ever done any mountain or rail-trail touring with a set of "butterfly" or trekking bars?

What did you think of them?

I just found this site so I thought I'd add my 2 cents. I use trekking bars on the 1 bike I own for day trips & long distance rides. I put gel pads under the bar tape, grip shifters & use an Ultralight mirror from Ortleib. My next bike (LHT) I will be changing to the same setup. There is enough room to add my Topeak med. size bar bag and my bell

I use Modolo Dumbo's... Ultra configurable and very capable.

I considered the Koga bars... They are sweet, but WAY too rich for my cobbleknocker blood.
