Do you think that if I call him a jerk, he'll respond?

I'm a half hour from the Blue Water Bridge.
I'd live to help if I could, I'm very curious to see how nice this bike really is.
I just picked up a Dawes from a storage sale that came from that site. Wow, I'm impressed!

Don't mean to come in so late in the conversation, but I have to agree with the Dawes suggestion. They have a great bike for the money.
Just to back up a little, Rennon makes an awesome chain tensioner that works on about any bike with vertical drops. They hold up on fixed gear conversions, they'll have no problem with a freewheel. Avoid the Surley and other cheaper models, the spring breaks or they're so noisy it spoils the ride.
You can always get your money back out of te Rennon and they're bullet proof.
You can also pull your gear set or cassette off of your wheel and install a single BMX style freewheel. Usually the second sprocket on the crank set is a good straight line to the single gear. That's my winter set up, I'm in Michigan.
Hope this helps.
