play should there be on a cb hub...from going forward back into brake mode

That's an odd question to answer. Why not just take it apart, grease the bearings, and make sure the friction areas are clean and dry?

Gearing isa big factor. The taller the gear ratio the less movement the crank will make between engaging and braking. If the gear ratio is low, the movement may approach a quarter turn,
