Now days Shimano has 10 speed rear clusters, even on the mountain bikes. It works great, but the prices are obscene, even for a chain. I think Campy has a 13 speed rear now, with proprietary shifters and all, not compatible with anything else even they make. When will they stop? 4x15?

Turns out the lack of gears is not a problem for me and this is the fastest bike in my stable, faster than my high-geared, fancy road bikes. I can't explain this but that's how it is.
So, converting to a single speed is getting to be a good idea for me. I don't care if anyone is faster than me and passes me, leaving me in the dust. I don't care. I want to enjoy my ride and not be concerned about competing with anyone in any way.

Campy, like Spinal Tap, goes up to 11.

that is a beautiful work of art - reminds me of the movie i watched recently - it was a lot like this thread

I love the handle bars in their utility - but where can you put the shifters - oh - there aren't any

Except for the past few months (where I sold my SS to help finance an Xtracycle build),'ve had a dedicated SS mtn bike since buying that first Monocog back in 2002. It's just fun! I dig the challenge,it's fu,I like it that none of my riding buddies ride one,it's fun,i's low maintenance,it's fun,did I mention bcause it's just fun too?

Been a few months since selling my beloved Jabberwocky, just picked up a used Origin 8 Scout 29 project (it was a friend from across the country's "beater bike that was parked out on the porch all year") that I'll start putting together in the next month...from March until November/December was just too long

The issue for me with a flat on a single speed is the bolt on hubs and getting the chain tension right if it the rear. it's possible to carry a 15 mm wrench with you on your ride but it doesn't fit in seat bag. I did build a front wheel for it with a quick release hub but you can't get by with that on the rear with the horizontal dropouts

(Industry Hack, does that PB wrench bolt onto water bottle bosses? Or does it have a clamp? Do you have a link? )

Or these.
Your bike might look strange with two QR levers on each wheel, but you won't have to carry the wrench, and can stow your wheel in your car easily.

Look in Home Depot or Sears for a wrench like this. Some of them are not heavy, and sold individually, usually with 2 sizes of ratcheting wrench head.

I like that peanut butter wrench above. I have one like it, with a pedal wrench on the other side. It has 14 and 15mm ends, and goes over long axles.

Axle wrench/pedal wrench combo, $10. You can saw it short with a hacksaw and grind the cut end so you can cram it in any bag.

$24 fancy bottle opener and axle wrench. It does bolt on water bottle bosses! cool.
