Living in the dc area, there's probably 40 shops within a 40 minute drive from me.

And probably 5 within a 40 minute ride with the kids in tow.

Off topic - Can I expect to see you at the Air Force Classic then this year?

I believe in supporting local businesses, so long as I am not paying too big a premium for it. I love the shop I patronize, although I appear to be in the minority in that regard. Buying online is a bit of a pain here in Canada, as the savings of buying online are often eaten up by shipping, customs and duty fees, so much so that it is rarely worth it to buy online here. If I really feel the need to avoid my LBS, I will go across the border to Buffalo, NY.

Go local bike shop. Visit a few and certainly you will find one that will make you happy and comfortable to buy from them. Online is good for accessories from time to time, but critical components and the bike itself are worth what extra bucks you "may" spend with a LBS. your bike will need service and a LBS knows you have a choice for buying elsewhere. Give them a chance. Good luck!

The AF Classic is a race. They also do a Crystal City ride which is not a race.

I've bought my last 4 bikes online saving at least 500 each time.
Very minor assembly. I know what I'm doing though.
In your case I'd say bike shop for the first one.

Always good idea to support your local bike shop.
But some there will be some things that are just simply cheaper and quicker to get by ordering online.
I buy all that I can from my local shop, but if they need to order it, then I look at ordering it myself if it's more cost effective.

I bought a bike last week, they knocked off 15% the bike price, just because it's me, a loyal returning customer, they threw in for free a set of ergo lock-on hand grips and eggbeater pedals because they knew that's how we do it. great team at my local bike shop! oh, and I got a free hat too

I'm all for supporting local business. When I bought my bike the owner gave me a good deal on it and he was very helpful in answering my questions . There were many questions, blame it on the journalism degree.
