Can a 6s cassette fit on a rear wheel made to fit a 7s cassette?
I'm looking in to buying some new rims for my old 87/88 Schwinn World Sport. It currently has a 6-speed freewheel on the rear wheel. I found a rear wheel that is labeled to work with a 7-speed freewheel.
My question is - Will the 6s cassette fit on there okay?
Well does bike have the old friction shifting systems and not the more modern indexed systems? If its indexed, you might have a problem, but I think in that time frame shifting was just moving a lever enough to make the gear change you wanted. If that's the case I can see no reason why it wouldn't work, but there may be one

Even if it's indexed, I don't see why that would make a difference.
I was a bike shop mechanic from 88' through 94' and from my recollection casette hubs really started to show up when everything went to 7-speed (about 1989). I think there may have been some french 6 speed cassettes back then but they are a completely different animal and will not index with Shimano or that era's SunTour shifters.
I think everything you are going to find in 6-speed will be freewheel only.
