big guy bike

When i started riding i was 267lb. I also didn't know what to buy The guy at the bike shop told me to get a hybrid bike. Hybrid bikes are between road and mountain giving you the best of both worlds. You sit in an upright position so your more comfortable they also include a softer saddle. The build on a hybrid is setup for you to be happy and want to ride your bike for miles at a time without any pain. The first year with my trek 7200 i loss 60lb and started riding longer rides. I now have 2 centuries under my belt and numerous rides. i have upgrade bikes a bunch of time and I am in the market again for a new one. it all started with that trek 7200 and it was a perfect starter bike. You should also look at giant cypress DX and the fuji crosstown you can buy these bikes all for under $500. Don't spend a lot of money on a starter bike use your money to buy gear (bike pants, air pump, shirts, lights and helmet) the more comfortable you are the more your going to want to ride. DO NOT BUY A BIKE ONLINE!! you should go to a bike shop and get fitted and also make sure you pick up a bike computer that way you can keep track of your progress. I know a lot of people will suggest a mountain bikes but mountain bikes work well if you ride them off road but if your going to ride on streets or paved roads, Parks or bike paths Hybrid bikes are the way to go. test ride one of the bikes i listed, you will love the feel of a hybrid.

I'm 240lb and have a bike of each style. They all have their purposes and I have not had a lick of problems with any of them. I would agree with another poster about hybrid bikes, I think they are good in-betweeners. I bought a Windsor Stratford from Bikes Direct online and had it assembled and functioning within about 45 mins or so. To do over, I would have upgraded that to one with 105 components as the Stratford had Sora derailleurs, which are junk. I replaced them within the first hundred miles. If you have any mechanical ability at all, you can set these up. If you have to go to a LBS to tweak anything, they'll be happy to take your money for that, even though you didn't get the bike from them. The neg about buying online is that you don't have the opportunity to ride the bike first, and you don't have a local shop to take it to if something is not right. Neither have been issues for me.

I should add that both my road bike and mountain bike were purchased at my LBS. The road bike because I invested significantly more $. The MTB because I was going on a ride with friends and the old Specialized MTB I bought on the cheap from Craigslist was garbage and I couldn't wait for mail. I should add that there was nothing wrong with the brand, I just didn't inspect closely enough before buying.

As a big guy I can relate. I am over 3 bills and with the exception of my aluminum seat frame, soon to be replaced with a custom built cro-moly one, my cro-moly bike frame is holding up really well.

6'2" and weigh in between 240 to 265#s depending on how much (or how little) I ride. My rode bike is aluminum with carbon seat stays/fork and flat bladed wheel spokes. I tend to be fastidious about general maintenance, and ride without abuse to my bike. Have not had any problems ..... probably the most important component would be a strong wheel set. Using ones head about abuse would be another. I have a friend who rides a much more expensive bike than I, weighs 25#s less, and has more problems with the weight supporting components of his ride ... simply by doing things like hopping curbs and the like.

Well I am 6' 5" and about 275#. I try and get things that will hold up to my weight and at 63 years old. I am finding I can still enjoy the ride just not as fast but usually can outlast the grandkids. If I can loose about 50 lbs then I can beat them up the hills also.

I just got my other bike out of the basement. Its a cannondale F500 MB. After atleast three years of not being ridden and a new front tube it worked great. I don't know if its my weight (365) or age (44) but my giant cypress dx is a much more comfortable ride.

I am 270 pounds and I ride a 2010 Trek 1.2 I have not had a single problem and have logged over 300 miles. When I was buying my bike my weight was not a concern of mine. I knew I was going to drop some weight and I went with what was in my budget and I thought I would like.

Were you fitted for your bike?
