This was my concern when I was shopping. When I went to the LBS and all they had for entry level was a $1000.00 bike, me and wife talked about it on our trip back home. She was okay with me getting it. However my concern was spending that kind of money on a bike, not having rode before and laying that sucker down, crashing it or any number of other events and wasting that money.
That all said, I am EXTREMELY happy with what I have. I would buy another in an instant. Its a nice looking bike, has been great to ride. Other than a couple hiccups that are more than likely from my inexperience, its been great.
Its not a full carbon bike. Its not a $1000+ bike. Its not a Shimano Ultegra bike. But it is my bike and I love it.
Before we were married, my wife didn't blink when I bought a new motorcycle. It's not so easy now, but she still doesn't question most purchases that don't come out of our joint account.
I have always heard that the proper number of bicycles was N+1. No matter what N is, you always need 1 more.

I got a mountain bike for my first wife. It was a good trade.
My first wife told me that either she went or the car went. Not my first or surely my last mistake, but I traded the car. Should have kept the car -- 20 -20 hind sight.
