Need help with shoes

I recently bought a pair of Bontrager Street cycling shoes from my bike shop. I knew these were entry level shoes but I liked the idea of not too stiff and the recessed clips. My plan was to buy the shoes now, because they were on sale, and the pedals and clips later. I noticed when I got home that the soles of the shoes were not recessed but looked as if you were supposed to cut out the rubber. Is this normal? Is this something my bike shop should do? Am I missing something? Help please.

P.S. I posted on the apparel thread but I don't think many people read it.

Yes, you cut out the rubber sole to mount the cleat. There should be directions in the shoe box. If not, look online, or ask at the bikeshop. When you do the cut out in the sole, you'll see the cleat mount behind the rubber.

Since you don't have the cleat yet, I'd wait and do this when I had everything together. And don't cut the sole until you understand what you're doing.
