I bought a pair of SUGOI shorts. They have a really great gel pad. The other pair I have just have what appear to be a cloth pad. Any opinions on ger vrs cloth?

I have both. I prefer a cloth type pad that wicks away moisture. The gel is heavy and doesnt breathe, which can be a problem in hot weather. I also use a Selle Italia XO saddle which isnt as hard as most racing saddles and has the cutout. I can ride all day with a medium weight cloth pad in bib shorts and this saddle. Ive tried other combinations, and dozens of different saddles over the years, even Brookes that were near $5oo$! The Xo works the best for me and its well under $100.

Better to spend the money on a good seat first. haha.

Cloud 9 (Sun Lite) replacement seats, $20-30, cheap, durable, comfortable. I have several including the models shown.
I prefer to ride in cargo shorts for most rides under 20 miles or mtn bike rides, but I am a cheapskate when it comes to road stuff, so I often ride in compression underwear that looks like bike shorts hahahahha. No more diaper ass!
They look like this and cost about $10-12, basically disposable if they get torn or worn out. Bike shorts cost $25-65 and don't seem much better to me on rides less than 40 miles. The chamois is annoying esp when walking. http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/b/0/0/27/6/AAAACxwPyN4AAAAAACdqDg.jpg?v=1231869681000

Or, you could get a bike with a real seat instead of a saddle...........

Remember the purpose of padded bike shorts:
wick moisture away and allow movement on the saddle with reduced friction.
Not cushioning for comfort
and by the way, no underwear.
and if you ride enough, you will look good in lycra!

Bib bike shorts are also nice. They have built in suspenders. This eliminates the elastic waistband and provides even more comfort on your rides.

I just picked up shorts from my local bike shop. Specialized shorts for $35 on the clearance rack! I like them, I am not a fan of baggy shorts.
