No you should not have to adjust it every time. You should be able to tighten the nut down tight enough to provide enough tension to hold the shifter in the upper ring yet still be loose enough for you to shift. That is why I say take it to a shop. There are wear parts and washers and plastic pieces that all work together to allow it to hold yet move like you need it to.
