You know, I've heard that a couple times now...
I used to work concrete, and wore carhartt bibs because I liked the way it supported the weight of my tools on my shoulders rather than my belt... I would assume it's the same principle.

The difference is amazing between bibs and shorts.
I was skeptical at first, bought a cheap pair of bibs and that was it, sold.
I have a few pair of deteriorating shorts, everything else are bibs.

As an aside, if you have any 'gut' bibs increase the comfort aspect hugely.
and since you're going to ask, they really aren't that difficult to maneuver in when
you have to go to the bathroom (ladies excepted).

OK, touchy question here; do you get any soreness in the nipple regions from the bibs?

LMAO!! now I know this could be a serious question for some, but for me, it just reminded me of that episode of The Office when they had a fun run for rabies.

That is hilarious! I thought it was a real picture at first. Some of us are more sensitive than others. I went snorkeling with no shirt and a nylon life vest in Mexico and was ready to die from the soreness.

Some funny stuff here...having said that, it is normal not to wear underwear under cycling shorts. I have ridden in underwear in hot weather and the underwear against my "naughty bits" (apologies to Manty Python) caused quite a chafing due to all of the sweat and bacteria. I have not used underwear when cycling since, unless I am going for a ride under 10 miles or so. If you are worried about the tight, stretchy lycra then maybe you want to consider some mountain bike shorts. Some of them look very much like walking shorts, or baggies and still have the chamois (that is the padding) inside. That way you do not have to feel self conscious while riding. I also recommend bibs. I had a paiir of regular lycra bike shorts for a while after I got my road bike but switched to bibs shortly thereafter, finding them MUCH more comfortable, especially around the waistline. I have not had any issues with soreness around my nipples and I can pretty much guess that with 1000s of club riders and pros logging 1000s of miles in them that that issue is quite uncommon. One of the posters said that they don't last that long...well that is true with the cheap stuff....as it is with most things. i have had mine for 4 years and they are as good as the day I bought them. One caveat though, always remember to wash them after you are done riding. You would be amazed how many times I have been asked that. Once you get some you will certainly want more than one pair, especially if you are commuting.

Cheers,

Brian J.

Thanks for all the advice, Brian... it's nice to get the goods from people who have already been there and found out what works. (props to all the other contributors as well!)
